Menstruatin’

For all my fellow menstruators out there-  Periods can be pretty terrible enough. The amount of waste produced from periods is even worse. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Periods can create a lot of trash, and we can do better than putting cotton treated with pesticides and all sorts of other chemicals in and around our bodies. Luckily, there’s a better option for us- better for our health, better for our environment, better for those public bathrooms who will be spared period trash can odors (y’all know exactly what I’m talking about).

Try a menstrual cup and/or reusable organic cotton pads and you’ll never look back. I promise.

I use a menstrual cup. I started wearing one about two years ago after hearing a friend rave about them. The concept is simple- just like a tampon, insert the cup into your vagina and it will catch what flows from your uterus.

You can wear them longer than a tampon (12 hours), you don’t have to worry about Toxic Shock Syndrome, you feel nothing, AND they catch it all. There are lots of great brands, and I use Intimina’s Lily Cup. It’s made from medical grade silicone and can literally last you the rest of your life. I ended up choosing the Lily Cup because of its comfortable shape and the fact that it is the only cup that can be rolled into the the size of a tampon (because honestly, the initial thought of inserting a CUP inside myself was a bit daunting.)

If you prefer pads, check out GladRags They’re a Portland based company and sell reusable cotton pads in a variety of shapes and sizes and colors. I have their organic cotton pantiliners and they’re the bees knees. We can always do better for ourselves and for the planet 💗

  1. Beautiful article and wonderful message! I love using the menstrual cup and in addition to that some washable cotton pads on the first couple of days of my period for some extra comfort. I think it is so important to share the message as often as we can in a positive and approachable way. Thank you for getting the message out there. Looking forward to reading more on your lovely blog! Love, Ina ❤
