Tea Time

Hot tea and beanies are the reasons why I survive winter.

If you’re a tea lover like me, you know that most teas will come in a box or tin of some sort, with another plastic or paper wrap over the tea bag, then the tea bag itself, with usually a string with some paper attached with a printed pithy quote about love and living life. So much packaging for a teaspoon or two of dried herb. Not to mention whatever the tea bag is made of is also steeping in your water. Yikes.

As always, there’s a way to consume without producing so much waste. So, I proudly present zero waste tea time.

Tea in Bulk

As my video shows, buying tea in bulk is insanely easy if you have a store with tea in bulk. But if you don’t, no worries!

You can also tea in bulk from some really awesome vendors. My favorite is an Oregon company called Mountain Rose Herbs which has a wonderful selection. The irony is that in buying this tea, you’ll still have packaging, BUT it will be less packaging than you would normally get. You also won’t have to worry about steeping pesticides alongside your tea. You’ll still also be able to compost your tea leaves and herbs without packaging.

Tea Strainers

Mesh strainers are a must have for me. These are found just about everywhere, online and in stores. I prefer to use a strainer without silicone- just metal. However, if you’d rather your strainer look like a whale or a person enjoying floating in a tea bath, that is possible.

Tea Party

If you’re making tea for several people, or more likely, you just want five cups to yourself, a tea pot with a strainer inside is a totally valid option, too. Here is one I’ve been eyeing for a while.

More Hardcore Options

As I mention in the video, if you’re really hardcore (#goals for me one day), you can grow your own herbs and totally surpass the capitalist system with your own sustainable practices! Go you. All that is then required is fully drying your herbs, and grinding them with a mortar and pestle. For the especially hardcore, you don’t even technically need a strainer!
There you have it, folks. Tea, zero-waste style. Easy, cheaper, healthy. Drink on!
